Oklahoma Softball Matches All-Time Division I Win Streak

Over the years, Oklahoma has established itself as one of the elite college softball programs in the country.

The No. 1 Sooners—coached by the legendary Patty Gasso—showcased why they are no strangers to success in May as they used a strong burst in the fifth inning to take down No. 16 Clemson, 9–2, on Friday at Marita Hynes Field. However, that wasn’t the only accomplishment of the day for the program.

After winning Game 1 of the women’s Super Regional series, the Sooners (55–1) tied Arizona’s Division I record of 47 consecutive wins. If Oklahoma wins Game 2 on Saturday against the Tigers, Gasso’s squad will eclipse the Wildcats’ mark—set during the 1996–97 season—for the most consecutive wins in Division I softball history.

The Sooners only loss this season came against Baylor back in February. 

Trailing 4–0 at the top of the fifth inning on Friday, Clemson (49–11) cut its deficit in half with Caroline Jacobsen’s two-run double, which allowed McKenzie Clark and Ansley Houston to cross home plate. But Oklahoma would respond as Haley Lee’s grand slam in the bottom of the inning—along with a solo homer from Alyssa Brito—provided the exclamation point for the Sooners in the victory.

Oklahoma sits one game away from its seventh consecutive berth in the Women’s College World Series. The Sooners will look to claim their spot among the final eight teams and make history when they face off against the Tigers again in Game 2 at noon on Saturday.
