Thai weightlifter's grandmother dies while celebrating his bronze medal
The grandmother of Thai Olympian Sinphet Kruaithong died Sunday while celebrating his bronze-medal performance in weightlifting, according to multiplereports.
Subin Khongthap, whose age has been reported at 82 and 84, fainted during a viewing party for her grandson's event, according to the Bangkok Post. Khongthap then reportedly regained consciousness after Kruaithong won the bronze, and was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
“The initial assumption is that she died from heart failure, but we have to wait for the hospital's result,” a local police officer told the AFP. “I'm not sure if she was too excited, or if maybe she was already ill.”
Kruaithong, 20, finished third in the 56-kilogram division. He was the second Thai athlete to medal at the Rio games.
