Jaguars Sign Former Bears, Titans Pass-Rusher Trevis Gipson
The Jacksonville Jaguars have added to their pass-rush depth.
One of the key sticking points with the Jaguars' defense a year ago was their lack of depth behind Josh Allen and Travon Walker. And with K'Lavon Chaisson signing with the Carolina Panthers in free agency and Dawuane Smoot remaining unsigned, the Jaguars have now turned to former Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans pass-rusher Trevis Gipson.
Gipson was drafted by Chicago in the fifth round (155th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. He’s played in 48 games with 19 starts in his career, recording 78 tackles (42 solo), 11.0 sacks, 21 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He most recently spent the 2023 season with Tennessee where he appeared in eight games. Originally from Cedar Hills, Texas, Gipson attended Tulsa (2016-19) and earned first-team all-conference honors during his senior season.
Gipson played under Jaguars outside linebackers coach Bill Shuey in the first two years of his career, including his seven-sack season in 2021. Since then, Gipson has recorded four sacks in 25 games, though he was mostly a bottom-of-the-roster player for the Titans and spent most of the season as a healthy scratch.
"Again, we felt we had Dawuane [smoot] coming back off injury, we knew he was coming back. We drafted a young man that we had a vision for. We had Chaisson in the last year of his deal," Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said at the end of the season.
"Moreso looking back at during the season, what we could’ve done to upgrade the roster, are there moves we could’ve made? Once again, I don’t live in the past. I don’t live in regret. But we’ve got to continue to look at those things and you’re never done trying to make your team better and more competitive.”
