Top-5 First-Round NFL Draft Targets For The Chargers

There are so many options for the Los Angeles Chargers with their number five pick.

As the Los Angeles Chargers gear up for the 2024 NFL Draft, their fifth overall pick holds immense potential to be a game-changer for the team. This draft class's depth provides a wealth of talent, and while any pick at number five seems promising, certain players stand out as top considerations for the Chargers. Let's delve into the top five players who the Bolts should draft in late April.

5. Marvin Harrison Jr. - Ohio State Wide Receiver

While arguably the best prospect in the draft, Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr. is placed at number five due to realistic considerations. The Chargers, holding the fifth pick, might see Harrison Jr. off the board by their turn. A freak athlete with deep ball threat capabilities, Harrison Jr. would be a dream addition to the Chargers' receiving options.

Harrison amassed 1,211 yards and 14 TDs in 2023 alone. While it might not be likely that Harrison falls to the Chargers at #5, he would be the only option if the four teams picking before LA take QBs.

4. Laiatu Latu - UCLA Edge Rusher

For the Chargers, addressing the defensive edge is crucial, and UCLA's Laiatu Latu emerges as a standout edge rusher. The best in his class, Latu, wreaks havoc on opposing offenses and could make an immediate impact at the professional level. Even with an already impressive roster of rushers, the uncertainties of the off-season make Latu a sensible choice for the Chargers.

Latu brought in 13 sacks this season, and with Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa—the Chargers would have the most terrifying pass rush trio.

3. Rome Odunze - Washington Wide Receiver

Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze is another compelling option for the Chargers. His past performances indicate he could be a key weapon at the next level. Odunze's remarkable body control, advanced route-running skills, and elite concentration make him an attractive prospect. Adding Odunze to the receiving corps could provide Justin Herbert with another potent weapon.

Odunze pulled in 1,640 yards and 13 TDs in 2023. The Chargers need a reliable deep threat for Herbert, and Odunze could be that option.

2. Brock Bowers - Georgia Tight End

Tight end Brock Bowers from Georgia stands out as a top prospect and a realistic option for the Chargers. He's the best tight-end prospect since Falcons' Kyle Pitts. Bowers brings a rare combination of skills to the tight-end position. With 716 yards and 6 TDs, Bowers can be a passing threat along with having the blocking ability to jumpstart the run game.

The Chargers haven't had an elite tight end since Antonio Gates, and Bowers could fill that void. With outstanding ball skills, strength, and infectious energy, Bowers aligns with the Chargers' vision, especially under the guidance of head coach Jim Harbaugh.

1. Malik Nabers - LSU Wide Receiver

The Chargers need to bolster their wide receiver corps, and Malik Nabers emerges as a prime choice. Nabers possesses explosive route-running abilities, exceptional ball skills, and the potential to be a reliable deep threat in the NFL. With uncertainties surrounding Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, Nabers could seamlessly fit into the Chargers' offensive scheme, offering a dynamic playmaking element.

The Chargers have an abundance of options with their fifth overall pick. The depth and talent in this draft class provide a rare opportunity to secure a game-changing player. Whether it's Nabers, Bowers, Odunze, Latu, or the dream scenario of Harrison Jr., the Chargers are poised for an exciting draft with the potential to shape their future success.
