Lance Berkman takes stance against LGBT equal rights in radio ad
Former Astros star Lance Berkman said he opposed LGBT equal rights and the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance in a radio ad.
Berkman attacks the law, which serves to provide equal protection for LGBT people. Berkman refers to transgender women as "troubled men" and insinuates that their presence would be threatening.
"No men in women's bathrooms, no boys in girls' showers or locker rooms," Berkman says in the ad. "I played professional baseball for 15 years, but my family is more important. My wife and I have four daughters. Proposition 1, the bathroom ordinance, would allow troubled men to enter women's public bathrooms, showers and locker rooms. This would violate their privacy and put them in harm's way."
The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance comes to popular vote on Nov. 3. It serves to open public accommodations to transgender people, protecting people in Houston from discrimination based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
