USC Football: Caleb Williams Heroics Not Sustainable for Trojans Playoff Dreams

Something must change going forward.

If the USC Trojans want to reach their goal of winning a National Championship, they are going to need to tighten things up. The Trojans defense has hurt them for three straight weeks and almost cost them the game.

But luckily for them, they have a superstar playing quarterback named Caleb Williams. Williams has bailed the team out week after week with his incredible play, which has kept their undefeated season alive.

However, this type of game plan isn't sustainable, and once the Trojans play better competition down the line, their luck may run out.

“Williams likely will need to be perfect during the next six games if USC wants to get over the hump it couldn’t last year and win the Pac-12 title and reach the College Football Playoff. But those aspirations seem so unrealistic right now — as has been the case for a few weeks, and the reasons why showed themselves on the field.”

USC now gets back-to-back games against Notre Dame and Utah, which will be no easy task. Both will want to tear down the Trojans defense and make life tough on the team.

“There will be better offenses, with better quarterbacks, better receivers, better offensive lines and better play callers that await. That’s the scary thing for USC’s defense, which has given up 41 points in consecutive weeks.”

After their next couple weeks, the Trojans are scheduled against Washington and Oregon, the two best teams in the Pac-12. If USC doesn't get their defensive issues right soon, Washington and Oregon will expose them.

Williams can only do so much, and it only takes one slightly off performance to bury the Trojans. Williams is incredible, but their close call against Arizona should be a reminder of what could happen.

The Trojans are a very talented squad, but unless the defense gets fixed, they will likely miss the College Football Playoff once again.
